Marimekko Cheerful Optimisim.....

Autumn/Winter 2009

Under the direction of Marimekko's new artistic director, Samu-Jussi Koski, CEO Mika Ihamuotila, unveiled the much anticipated A/W 2009 collection at the Helsinki Cable Factory. Mr. Ihamuotila described the theme of next autumn’s collection as “Happy Conflict." Life today is full of conflicts and we would all be happier if we tried to resolve the ones we can and live with those we can't.

The following are some highlights from Copenhagan Fashion Week February 05,2009. The dress above caught our eye with its unique color pattern and modern feel. it is covered in colorful beads following the same pattern and colors of the fabric beneath. It looked and moved beautifully.

Head Designer and Artistic Director, Samu-Jussi Koski says that the collection represents what he feels modern Marimekko should look like today. You can expect to see many of the same qualities that have become synonymous with Marimekko, clean lines, structure, femininity and modern.

The show began with an burst of color with models wearing bold colored pieces, beautiful feminine silk dresses in gorgeous jewel tones along with luxurious velvet separates.

There were magnificent oversized knits designed by Piia Rinne and Noora Niinikoski that can be worn as sweaters or a dress. The collection was bold, fresh and cheerful. It was still classic Marimekko but with a chic modern twist.

The collection, celebrates Marimekko's classic aesthetic, practicality and the spirit of Finland. I hope you enjoy the designs that I have chosen, these are my favorites. To view the entire collection please visit Vogue U.K.

Enjoy!

  2. Charlie, this is the best looking Marimekko collection since all the problems over there! I agree the first dress makes a fun statment and I really would like to have that sweater if I was taller than 156cm :-( Nice stuff! The velvet suites are posh I love the colors. I am glad that what you call the collection better, Happy Conflict sounds negative, It is time to get some cheer and optimism into our Marimekko! That poor man has been shamed by that woman, I am very happy that karma was on his side. This is a great collection for Samu. His stuff is like Marc Jacobs but with a Finland feel. Fantastic post! You are the best!

  3. Hi Helena,
I agree with you! I like the soft colors as well as the darker ones because they somehow managed to balance it out. They really must be applauded for designing a collection that has remained to to the essence of Marimekko.

  4. Hi Stylista, I like a lot of the new elements of this collection. It is nice to see a totally new direction without completely losing the old Marimekko. These will be popular pieces. I never stopped to compare this awesome designer with MJ but I will take a closer look. SJK has such a strong design aesthetic that he really makes it difficult for me to compare.

BTW: Thanks for your kind words:-)

  5. I love the blue and yellow short dress. Adorable.

I just happened upon a Norwegian photographers work and think it's magical. Have you ever heard of Rune Guneriussen?

  7. Hi Christy, That is such a cute shift. In the Helsinki show the also showed it unbelted and it looked great! This collection will be a hit! (The models were over six feet tall, the dresses look shorter than they would on us.) That makes me happy :-)

I have seen the work of Rune Guneriussen. His work has a real magical feeling to it. I like how his mind unfolds and how he brings his message to you. He is such an amazing artist. I wonder if he sees himself as a photographer or as an artist? Either way I like his work.

  8. Hi Patricia,

“Happy Conflict" is such a contradiction in term, yet it's a very positive and optimistic way to view the world around us. Accept and change. Great message.

The new Marimekko is really taking off with a bang. It cannot be easy to attempt to nudge a "national treasure" like Marimekko into a new era, and I am so pleased that they are succeeding.

  9. Holla! I like the pink and orange dress! What a strange and beautiful combination. The purple velvet suit is awesome as well. I don't think I have ever liked anything from this design house but this is really a great collection.

  10. :- ) you are too funny! I agree, the combination is different but in a refreshing way. I really think that they have finally crossed into fashion. Samu-Jussi Koski is a wonderful designer he obviously works very well with his new team as well as the new CEO. It is wonderful to see what a wonderful reception this collection is receiving. I am thrilled for them! The velvet pieces are to die for! I will definitely get those as well as a couple of others.
