Houseboat Living....

Espoo, Finland

Ever since I watched the movie Sleepless in Seattle, in 1993, I have daydreamed of living on a houseboat. At the time I actually lived in the Seattle area and after watching the movie I looked into the possibility of buying a houseboat on Lake Washington.

But it was too late, houseboat prices went through the roof after the movie was released and that was the end of that daydream...until now!

Since receiving these photos I've started to once again wonder what it would be like to live on a houseboat? The climate here can be very harsh, sometimes unrelenting. So is this an impossible dream?
I have been assured that these houses have been made for this environment, and they come equipped with the latest in hi-tech solutions, ensuring that all neccessary requirements have been met and clients can, if they want, live onboard year round.
All floating houses by Marina Housing, follow an environmentally friendly philosophy in its construction. There is very little interference with the natural surroundings, as the only contact to the environment consists of four concrete anchors on the sea floor.
So if you are considering a change in lifestyle perhaps looking for a summer place, a houseboat could be what you need to start you daydreaming about the all the possibilities.

Enjoy!
Head on over to Julia’s Place Hooked on Houses to see what others are excited about today!

  1. I have never seen a boathouse in Helsinki especially not in the capitol area. I will have to go and see this houses. I love the clean white interiurs and all the beautiful views except not the big tall buildings. I wonder if you need a boat to live in one? I still like the concept very much. Lily

  2. Hi Lily, They parked the houseboat at that location summer of 2008. It is in the marina in front of Nokia House, that is where they have their offices.

I have to admit I love the idea of living on water. The houses are also appealing to me. I don't think you need to have a boat to live in that sort of house but it would be fun to have a boat. I am glad you like it. Let me know what you think when you go and see it.

  3. Beautiful! (Sleepless in Seattle is one of my favourite movies.) I went to the Reposaari holiday housing fair last summer and saw some of the houseboats and although they were pretty they were kind of impractical. But I wouldn't mind having one.

  4. Hi Helena, I would love to go and see them! Houseboats in America come in so many shapes and sizes. I have a friend that lives in a houseboat that is about 300sm in San Francisco, nice place, amazing views. I cannot wait to see what this company is building in Inkoo!

  5. Dear Charlie, I could easily hop aboard this house vehicle for a long 6 months summer break. For the winter, au contraire, I am kind of uncertain of my what my attitude would be....anyhow I am exited over what looks to be a high quality of construction.

    Will you hop aboard???

    Wonders,
    Ia

  6. Wow these houseboat photos are absolutely gorgeous. I've never been on one, but would love to try it for a week long summer vacation, perhaps. I found your site through Hooked on Houses and love it. I vacationed in a small lake community in Finland a few years ago and loved it. I ate the best crepes of my life on the water in Helsinki, and took a high speed boat to Tallinn. What a neat part of the world you live in!

  7. How lovely would it be to have a houseboat like that?! It would be a nice summer retreat.

You would never know these were the interiors of houseboats. Very stylish!

Another beautiful post, Charlie. Thank you!

  8. Hi Ingela, I am seriously considering it! But I fear the winter months as you mention. The location of the one I will be looking at is supposed to be protected from the high winds in the winter. I must first see what the area is like, because I wouldn't want to be smack in the center of a town. I will definitely keep you all posted, the excitement would be too much to keep to myself in anycase:-)

  9. Hi Christy, Welcome to CDD! I adore Hooked on Houses, I am so pleased that you found your way here!
Houseboats are so much fun in the summer! We once rented a onein Georgia and spent an entire week just roaming around on Lake Lanier. Our children still talk about that vacation and count it as one of their favorite. Of course the interior of these houseboats are completely different from the "Mark Twain" on Lake Lanier but it would be just as much fun.

Your stay here sounds wonderful. Finland is such a beautiful and diverse country. There are so many different things to enjoy.

Once again, thanks for stopping by and I will make my way over to you and say hello:-)

    Have a great weekend!

  10. Hi Julia! The love the interiors as well. The evening photos really throw you off, you could be anywhere, it definitely doesn't look like a boat. I can visualize a warm summer evening, sitting on the deck and enjoying the splendor of the water and the long beautiful summer nights.

    Have a great weekend!

  11. Love house boats. Once went to a New Year's eve party on a house boat in Boston - fun! I think it would be fun to rent one for 6 months to see if it's a good fit.

  14. MNH..
Renting before comitting to a purchase is probably the way to go. I wonder how much of my desire to have one stems from all the romance surrounding the Sleepless in Seattle houseboat. Lots to think about:-)
    ..............

    Paul,
I cannot help thinking how fabulous it looks and how much fun one could have entertaining there!

    Have a great weekend!

  16. I love the design of these houseboats. Very modern and elegant. There is nothing like being near the water, except for maybe living on the water.

  17. Hi Tareq, Houseboats are such a new thing in Finland that when I came across this one I was totally smitten, again. Then as I was getting ready for the post and talking to the project manager it started really tugging at me. This could actually happen. I have to admit, I am loving the idea of living in such a place! You have a valid point, never wanting to go to work could become an issue:-)

  18. Hi Patricia, I love the architecture and the interior design! And it comes completely set up with the latest B&O entertainment systems and other fun toys. Living on water never sounded this good. The open floor plan, the upstairs and downstairs decks would be great for entertaining. This daydream keeps getting better and better with every comment.

  19. Great pics. My brother in law used to live right by where sleepless in seattle was filmed and you are right the prices went through the roof. I agree it is exciting and doesn't look like a boat:)

  20. Hi Gina, Welcome to CDD! I am so pleased you like these photos. I like the way they set it up with a 2nd story up instead of downstairs and the colors and decor as well are calm and serene.

Do you live in Seattle? My daughter moved back to the Seattle area after she finished school. Once you get a taste of the Pacific Northwest it's hard to stay away too long.

Thanks again for stopping by! I will stop over at your place and say hi!
