The Beauty Of Rice Grain Porcelain...Brocade Anyone?

Eeva Jokinen is a Finnish ceramist, specializing in the art of rice grain porcelain ceramics. I have been terribly excited about bringing her work to you for weeks! Her pieces are magnificent! Whether it's a cup or a sink it truly is a thing of beauty!

She works at studio Pot Viapori, a cooperative, situated on the island of Suomenlinna, a historical sea fortress off the coast of Helsinki.

"East from the sun" three unique bowls circa 2007

"Rice grain porcelain is an ancient ceramic method. The wall of an object is first pierced through with a sharp tool. After the biscuit firing the hole is filled with glaze which melts into the hole in the later firing creating a small translucent window."

"Change" unique bowl circa 2008

"My pieces are made by throwing or casting. I use soft paste porcelain with a small amount of bone ash to increase the whiteness. The fragility that is often applied to porcelain occurs in my objects in the decoration. I like the dialogue between light and shadow, glaze and body, hole and substance. The fragility notwithstanding, my pieces are durable and usable. They are
dishwasher proof and can be used in a microwave oven."

Breakfast set. In production with many different designs

"Instead of strict form I aim at emotion. To me the light passing through my objects and whiteness give a sense of peace and harmony one can come back to time after time. "

Series: Rains and snows; "Tuisku" (whirling) circa 2007

About the Artist
I make small-scale production porcelain tableware and unique, one of a kind, pieces too. My work can be purchased presently from the studio, Suomenlinna Summer Shop B34, Design Forum Finland, Artebia OY and OKRA. Online shopping coming soon! If my timetable allows I can also carry out special orders. Customer’s wishes and my own artistic view combined create object which pleases both parties.

I graduated from the University of Art and Design in 2002 and started my professional career as a ceramist at Pot Viapori right after. As my MA thesis, I studied rice grain porcelain, its techniques and materials. I researched glaze properties, and what kind of glaze fills the holes and does not fall away from it in the firing. The method inspired me and I am still working on it all these years later. Researching and finding new ways to use it and approach it.

"My grandmother had a rice grain patterned coffee set by Arabia, and as a child I admired it above all else."

Enjoy!

I love the delicate beauty of these--a perfect fusion of style and function. I esp. like the swirling patterns of the bowls in the first photo and the floral pattern in the cups on the last.

Jean, You are so right... It is lovely to be able to own a piece so lovely and be able to use it. It is wonderful that her pieces can be put in a dishwasher and microwave. The "East from the sun" bowls are amazing!

oh my. beautiful! I'm a classicist, so I love that these are straightforward and white... yet offer juuuust the right amount of embellishment. gorgeous, charlie!

and, hold the phone... dishwasher safe? that's my type of teacup ;)

Franki Durbin...that is exactly what I said! I love pretty teacups but most of the time the washing becomes an issue with my gang. Same thing with the color, I love white and that has somehow become harder and harder to find. Especially if you want a little embelishment that is monochromatic.

So glad you like Eeva's work! She is so talented!
