Interview with Icon Eero Aarnio

Eero Aarnio is one of Finland's most esteemed designers. He is also one of the most influential and innovative designers of the past fifty years. His designs can often be seen in films such as "The Fifth Element" and "Men in Black" not to mention countless magazine covers.

He lives in Veikkola, Finland with his wife of 52 years, Pirkko. His famous designs are as popular today as they were 45 years ago. He is known around the world for his sculptural and playful yet functional designs made of fiberglass, acrylic and colored plastic. His passion for design and his love of color is quite evident in everything he does. Iconic pieces such as, The Ball and Bubble chairs have captured the imagination since their launch in the 1960s and have managed to retain their appeal all these years later.

You are an Idol to many young architects, designers and artists around the world. Who were your influences or mentors in the design world when you began your career?
American industrial designer Raymond Loewy.

What is your greatest source of inspiration?
Nature. I love the outdoors.

What is the most effortless part of the design process?
The idea. I am inspired by my surroundings and whatever I happen to be doing. It's like a lightbulb going on.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
Finding the solution.


How would you describe your style?
Functional fantasy!

What do you do when you are not designing?
I like to travel.

Is there anything that you are looking forward to working on?
A solar powered car.

Are you someone who is likes change or are you happy to leave things as they are? Change, because nothing ever stays the same.

What is your greatest achievement to date?
A happy marriage.

With a career spanning over 45 years, Eero Aarnio is at the height of his popularity today. Over the past several years, the designer has released an awesome array of new products and as of last Friday, shows no sign of slowing down.   3. Fascinating post. I love the photo of Mr Aarnio and his wife in the kitchen -it's such a vibrant, workable space.
    I was also interested that he cited Raymond Loewy as his main influence. The architect of my house, Andrew Geller, headed up Loewy’s New York City architecture department for 35 years.

    That is fascinating indeed! Mr. Lowey was perhaps one of the most influential figures in our country's history! What an awesome connection to your own home's history! This has been an amazing experience!

    I also love his home, it is light and bright with wall to floor windows! His studio is also in his home, it is a beautiful space with light pouring in! The photo of the Double Bubble lamp in front of the window is seen as you walk up to the Aarnio home. What a welcoming sight! Can you tell how happy this made me:-)
